The Story Behind Birdie Board

Last summer, I was on a golf trip with seven friends. We wanted to make it more than just a few rounds, we wanted a true three-day competition. To keep everything organized, I built a Google Sheet sheet that handled scoring, tracked handicaps, and pulled everything together into a final leaderboard.

It turned out to be a hit. Everyone could just enter their scores, and the sheet did the rest. It made the whole experience easier and a lot more fun.

Fast forward nine months. We were planning our next trip, this time with twelve players. That’s when I realized Excel wasn’t going to cut it anymore.

Why I Decided to Build an App

Golf is an incredible game, but keeping score in different formats can get messy. Some groups want stroke play, others prefer Stableford, and once teams and handicaps are added in, it gets complicated quickly. What really stood out on that first trip was how much everyone enjoyed not just the scores, but the fun highlights, who had the most birdies, who went on a hot streak, and even who found the worst hole.

That’s when the idea for Birdie Board came together. I wanted something that:

  • Makes scoring simple by letting players just enter scores while the app handles the rest.

  • Supports multiple formats and styles of play.

  • Adds to the fun by highlighting the exciting and sometimes funny moments.

  • Works for everyone, no matter what device they have.

Building Birdie Board

I started by focusing on the foundation: making sure the scoring calculations were correct. Once the core was solid, I turned my attention to the design.

At first, I sketched wireframes by hand. Later, I used AI to help generate mockups that gave me new ideas for layouts and style. That mix of manual and AI design really helped shape the look and feel of Birdie Board.

What Comes Next

Birdie Board started as a tool to make one golf trip more fun, but it has grown into something much more exciting. My goal is simple: to help golfers everywhere enjoy their matches without the hassle of messy scorekeeping.

This blog will be a place to share updates, stories, and the journey as Birdie Board continues to grow.
